xBRL-CSV is a modern, syntax-independent reporting standard from XBRL International. As part of the Open Information Model (OIM), it combines the extreme storage efficiency of flat CSV table documents with the semantic expressiveness and validation rules of a classic XBRL taxonomy, governed by a JSON metadata description.
Significance for the financial sector: For European banking and insurance reporting (e.g., COREP/FINREP or Solvency II), this format represents a technological quantum leap. Given the increasing demand for highly granular data, xBRL-CSV reduces file sizes by an average of over 90% (and by up to 98.2% in pilot tests) compared to traditional XML.
Institutions benefit from data validation that is up to 50 to 60 times faster while maintaining consistently low memory usage, effectively preventing reporting delays and system crashes.
